OrdPal ("we", "our", "the app") is a vocabulary-learning app that helps people learn words from text and everyday surroundings across multiple languages. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.

1. Information We Collect

• Account information: email address (for sign-in via Apple, Google, or email).
• Reader profile data: the first name and age group you enter for each reader profile in the app (yourself or a child you're setting it up for). We do not require last names or any other identifying information.
• Text-scan photos: Apple Vision recognizes text directly on your iPhone or iPad. These photos are not uploaded to OpenAI for text recognition.
• Extracted text: when OrdPal suggests vocabulary, the recognized text is sent to OpenAI. When you select a word, that word and its surrounding line or sentence are sent to OpenAI for a contextual explanation.
• Scene photos: photos analyzed by the adult scene feature are sent to OpenAI once to identify useful objects and conversation ideas. They are not retained on our servers after processing; the photo is stored only on your device, and deleting the scene or the app removes it.
• Saved scenes & tutor conversations: the results of a scene analysis (object labels, conversation lines) and your tutor chat messages are stored in your account so you can reopen a scene and continue practicing. Messages you send to the tutor are processed by OpenAI to generate replies, feedback, and scores.
• Word library: words you look up, stored in your account so the library persists across devices.
• Subscription status: whether you have an active subscription, managed through Apple and RevenueCat.
• Usage data: daily plan-limit counts and aggregate counts of text scans, scan outcomes, word selections, suggestions, image generations, and scene analyses. Aggregate product metrics do not contain the photographed text, selected word, photo, or user identifier.

2. How We Use Information

• To provide the app's core features (on-device text recognition, contextual word lookup, scene vocabulary, conversation suggestions, learning-image generation, and reader profiles).
• To enforce subscription plan limits.
• To improve app reliability via aggregated, non-personal usage data.

3. Third-Party Services

• OpenAI: processes extracted text, selected words and context, and scene photos; it also generates suggestions, explanations, conversation ideas, and learning images. Subject to OpenAI's privacy policy.
• Apple Vision: recognizes text on the device. Text-scan photos do not leave the device for recognition.
• Firebase (Google): authentication, database, and image storage. Subject to Firebase's privacy policy.
• RevenueCat: subscription management. Subject to RevenueCat's privacy policy.
• Apple: in-app purchases and Sign in with Apple.

4. Use by Children

OrdPal can be used by readers of any age, including children under parental supervision. When the app is used by a child, the parent or guardian creates and manages the account and any child profiles inside it. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children directly — child profiles within the app contain only a first name and age group entered by the parent. We do not display ads, do not use any reader's data for advertising or behavioural marketing, and do not share profile information with third parties for advertising purposes.

5. Data Retention & Deletion

You can delete your account and all associated data from the app's settings at any time. We retain data only as long as your account is active or as required to comply with legal obligations.
